UPDATE FOR BREEDERS FOLLOWING THE

INTERVERTEBRAL DISC DISORDER SURVEY

Following the recent survey into Inter-Vertebral Disc Disorder (IVDD) in Coton De Tulears in the UK, our Breed Health Co-Ordinators would like to keep breeders informed with further information on this subject.

Breed Standard – Minor changes

Following the publication of the new breed standard for the Coton de Tuléar on the 1st November 2017, there was a considerable amount of adverse comment on various social media sites about it and presumably some written submissions to the Kennel Club. The Kennel Club made a number of suggestions to the Breed club and they responded quickly. Since then the Breed Standards Committee have considered all of the information submitted to them and today the Secretary of the Coton de Tuléar Club of the UK received the email reproduced below. At its recent meeting the Breed Standards Committee noted the further response from the Coton de Tulear Club of the UK regarding suggested amendments to the standard. Following detailed consideration and taking into account the content of the FCI standard for the breed, the committee agreed the following minor amendments: Coat Of unique cotton texture without woolly undercoat. The coat is full and supple, standing away from the body. Can be slightly wavy, not heavy, curly, coarse or silky. Never trimmed except to tidy feet. Coat texture is more important than length. Size Dogs 25-30 cms (9 -11 ins); Bitches 22-27cms (8 - 10 ins). The Breed Standards Committee confirmed that, wherever possible, the spirit of the FCI standard should be followed, but that Kennel Club Breed Standards should describe the ideal and avoid references to faults. The above changes have been approved by the Board and will be effective from 1 June 2018. Yours sincerely Caroline Hallett Caroline Hallett Registered Societies Manager The Kennel Club Clarges St London W1J 8AB The Coton de Tuléar Club of the UK fully support the two changes. The insertion of the words “Can be” before ‘wavy’ removes any possible ambiguity and giving different heights for dogs and bitches will assist judges and breeders in the long term. The heights reflect the FCI standard.

Corvid-19 Precautions

Due to the current situation with regards to the Corvid-19 virus, and the recent announcements by the Government, the Committee have decided that the 2020 AGM will not go ahead at this time. This will also include any Breed Awareness Days or Fun Day activities.

The Committee are hoping that the Breed Club Show might go ahead inconjunction with the City of Birmingham Championship Show in August, but this will depend on further developments with the current situation and if the City of Birmingham Show goes ahead.
